Cruise To Key Largo on January 7

The South Florida Miata Owners Group is having a meet-up and cruise next Sunday, Jan 7.  Meet on Key Biscayne in the a.m., then cruise to Key Largo for lunch.  I am posting here in case anyone in this group is interested in going.  Details on Facebook, here:

Unfortunately for members of the South Florida Miata Club, its the same time as the monthly meeting in Hollywood at noon. For those that go, perhaps it’s more enjoyable to take the route from Key Biscayne through Coconut Grove, down Old Cutler Road for a scenic drive.

Ooops. Sorry about that. Thanks, for the route suggestion; I will pass it on.

    Custom Made Luggage for RF

Geri’s Bazaar has been making custom luggage that fits perfectly in the trunk of the MX-5 for many years. I purchased a five piece set back in August and found them to be very well made. These bags are water repellent and machine washable.

The set sells for $160. The cost for custom embroidery is $6.

    Replacement Top

    Hi Miata Family

Here on South Lake, I left the Miata in the driveway….someone slashed the roof and stole what was in the car. Tampered with the Eng Comp now the car from touch the key and go to start but does not run. Have my hands full.

Any advice on replacement top? Vinyl vs Canvas? Glass vs Panorama plastic zip out? My phone is 954-205-4007.

I am sorry to have missed many happy venues but I assure you all it was beyond my control. To add to my 2017 Medical woes, on a routine yearly visit to one of my specialists, he “messed up” a simple test causing internal bleeding plus gave me sulphur drugs, did not know I was allergic to this, which ended me in bed for over 4 weeks. From 150lbs I am now 136lbs just started to walk without aids.

Hopefully will be there next Sunday. Looking forward to a better year 2018.

    Enjoy the new year!

Very sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations. Are you sure your ECU was compromised? Could it be merely coincidental with another issue?

Replacement top is a matter of preference. Some of the replacements as you mention come with glass; standard replacement is plastic window. Depends on how original you want to maintain the car. If you’re not concerned with it being OEM, then a glass replacement would be the way to go – vastly more durable. That said, I have a 23-year-old 1994 original Miata, with original top and perfectly clear back window, but it has been garaged and well cared for, with as-needed 3M plastic cleaner and polish to keep it pristine. It’s not a huge amount of work to keep it in good shape.

I personally don’t like the looks of the tops with the additional side windows, but that would be a matter of your personal preference. (Not sure if that’s what you meant by “panoramic”, or if you were simply referring to the plastic rear window.)

Considering I’ve never had to replace my top, I could not recommend brands. Of course, OEM is always a good option, except for price.

I don’t think I’ll be able to make the next meeting, so I may miss you, otherwise it would have been good to see you. Great to hear you’re again “out and about” and best of health to you in the New Year!

Sorry about your health issues (been there). I too am about to re-top my ’97. I think I’m going back to plastic window. But I would love to hear what everyone says. Hopefully, everyone will chime in.

    New Car Stereo

Timing was as if it is a Christmas gift (to myself) but I had bought this a few weeks ago, after the ’94 OEM MSSS stereo finally bugged me enough to do something about. I had had the unit refurbed a number of years ago, and again as recently as just over a year ago, but the last time, parts are no longer available to cure what ailed it. So . . . . .

A conversation with DJ ended with something like “So I can get a new head unit from Crutchfield for under $100?!?” So I ordered one.

Since the MSSS unit was a Pioneer, and I had this misguided feeling that if the MSSS unit was Pioneer, then the replacement should also be Pioneer, I ordered an inexpensive unit. It’s got Bluetooth, and a number of other new features. It’s a single-DIN replacing a double-DIN, so the install kit came with a cubby under the head unit. So now I have a place to put my phone while it is Bluetooth connected to the radio.

After searching on the internet, and going to some places DJ sent me, I found (mostly) exactly which wires from the OEM unit did what: LF, LR, RR, RF, switched power, antenna signal, unswitched power, etc. The only thing that I could not make work is the upper door tweeters, but it’s really no big deal since a number of years ago the main door speakers were replaced with a good two-way speaker.

So, after a few hours ensuring the connections were right, and some fiddly work with the installation kit, it’s in the car and sounds SO much better than the OEM MSSS unit. Color me happy!

Bottom line: it’s AMAZING, what can be bought these days for under $100 – shipped!!!!

PS: Now, what the hell is a MSSS and can you do something about that ugly shifter knob? 🙂

      Mazda Sensory Sound System.

Nothing needing to be done about the shifter knob. That’s a highly coveted Voodoo shift knob. All my manual transmission cars have a round shifter knob: the ’94, the ’90 Track Rat, and the ’91 NSX (although the latter’s is black, not polished).

Update: after listening closely, the door tweeters ARE working. Which is good, since after looking at the wiring diagrams and seeing they are connected to the larger door speakers, I couldn’t figure out how they were NOT working. I assume they are not as efficient as the aftermarket door speakers in there now, so they don’t produce much sound.

We just want to thank everyone

We just want to thank everyone for all the wonderful things you gave us for the homeless Christmas celebration.

On Sunday, you brought 65 pairs of sock, clutch bags, toiletries, etc. You donated a total of 234 pairs of socks for those in need. That is more than double of what we collected last year. Thank you all so very much. Socks mean a lot to those who don’t have them, especially when it is cold or they are looking for work. Some places will not let them work without wearing socks.

You all mean a lot to us and I pray God blesses all of you with a safe, healthy, and wonderful 2018.

    God Bless,

    Rosalyn, Karen, and Brian
