Doesn’t seem to show up as much on…

The paint chip problem doesn’t seem to show up as much on our White ND. Looks like it chips the red off to show a white primer.

On Miata.net people were quoting like $2,500 for front, hood and rockers, so I discounted the Idea.

Andrew, how much of car is covered in the $900 you mentioned?

I found a place that does mostly exotics and went to see him. Had 2 Lambos, a Porsche and ZR1 in there being completely wrapped. Quoted me $800 to do the bumper and partial front of hood and fenders and mirrors. The name of the company is Auto Nuvo in Fort Lauderdale.

The entire front bumper, about 12″ of the hood and fenders, the mirrors, door handle and inside door panel (above the arm rest. I did not do the headlights. That cost a little over $900 in 2016. For the entire hood and fender, the price would have gone over $1500. My last car (that had PPF) was a 2003 Infinity G35 where I applied the sames areas and that worked very well. Back then, only had one large rock penetrate the film on the hood and left a very small chip/ding. I believe the film prevented serious damage from that impact. The film held until I sold the car in 2010. I use Plexus to clean, polish and maintain the PPF (also applies to window tint).

The company I used was Auto Supershield out of Boca.

    Paint Chips

For those of you who have recently purchased a new MX-5 or are considering one in the near future, please be aware that the paint being used by Mazda and most car companies today is water based meaning it chips very easily.

In order to preserve the look and paint of your new car, you should definitely consider putting PPF, paint protection clear film to keep the paint from chipping. I wish I had. Now the front of my car looks like it was shot with buckshot and will have to be repainted. The cost of the film will be well worth it for you down the road.

Wow! Not seeing this on the original Machine Grey.

Wow, it appears worse than I had imagined. It brings up memories of my 1998 Infinity I30. Since then I have had PPF on my nice cars. I can attest it really does the job and last for quite a while. My Infinity G35 had it on for 7+ years and only incurred one ding/chip from a large rock. Even with that said, the ding/chip was hardly visible and would have been a lot worse without the PPF. When I sold the car, it looked brand new.

Back in 2003 the install job cost around $600, today on my ND it cost $900; well worth the investment. Very hard to tell its on.

Note there is a bit of prepping with clay to remove tiny stuck on debris and it must be installed indoors just like window tint to prevent as mush airborne dust and particle from getting between the film and paint. Takes a couple of hours to install and the panels are laser cut to fit perfectly. Contact me if you want further information.

Gunther Mazda has a $1,600 dealer upcharge on my ‘17 RF for a paint finish with a supposed 10 year warranty, I guess well worth the cost as no problems in nine months and 6,000 miles.

    Still looking for meeting locations?

I had dinner this evening at Skyline Chili in Sunrise and they have a nice room we can use for a meeting. The only thing they ask to use the room is that people eat from Skyline.

    2019 ND Owners Manual

For those interested, here is the link to review the 2019 ND Owners Manual. There will be quite a few changes least of all the increased horsepower and back up camera. One disappointing fact is there will not be any body refresh for this model year and probably no bright colors added to the palette. Also, with the laws requiring back up cameras in all new vehicles, Mazda stuck the camera on the new ND in the middle of the bumper, not where the license plate area is to somewhat hide it. Not a very flattering look.
One other note, Mazda will be releasing a 30th Anniversary Edition later in the model year and rumor has it that it will be a brand new color. Hopefully a vibrant one!
