    What Is Your Other Car?

MX5 sports car enthusiasts share the love of our sports cars, we enjoy road trips and gatherings, talking about our cars and gaining greater appreciation and knowledge of the subject.

But, many of us also have another car or two in the family. A two seater convertible is a great ride, but it’s not practical for every purpose under the sun.

So, what is your other car?

In our case, we need a car than can carry more luggage, scuba gear, Home Depot supplies, a few extra passengers, etc. I just turned in our second Mazda CX-5 for a new Kia Niro hybrid that gets more than 50 miles to the gallon, with a good aerodynamic design, good cargo space, lots of techie features and — again, about 600 miles on a small tank full of gas. When you start it up, there’s no noise. It rolls down the road very efficiently, it has very large batteries and an electric motor that delivers 29hp in addition to the efficient 1.6 liter 110 hp gas engine (total 195 ft lb torque) that comes on when you need power, or to recharge the battery bank. Once the car is rolling, it takes very little power to maintain speed. And, there is no drive shaft. Looking forward to taking it on a road trip up to Weeki Wachee to see the mermaids for a gathering of friends in a few weeks time to really test the roadworthiness.

We have a Toyota Rav4 SUV. For a couple of years, 2010 -11, Toyota offered the Rav4 with 3 row seating on a limited basis and I was lucky enough to order one so we have seating for 7 in a small SUV. Works out great when the family is in town.

Last November we we leased (for the first time), a 2018 CX-5. We had a Subaru Forester for 7 years prior to that. When the lease is up, who knows what will be the next car, but most likely another SUV.

The 2001 Miata is one of nine vehicles we have, and only two of them are projects! My everyday driver, other than the Miata, is a 2005 Subaru Baja pickup. Mary’s everyday driver is a 2012 Honda Odyssey. So we have the Japanese market covered. The others are a mix of vintage British, German and American classics.
A word of caaution: one of my fellow driving instructors, who is also an EMT, cautioned me that in his line of work KIA stands for Killed In Automobile….

I’ve heard the KIA abbreviation. To be fair, the model we’re driving scored the highest in its class in the latest crash tests.

My other car is a BMW X3. Need it when family come from the island of Trinidad to visit and shop.
